Local Man Combines His Two Passions, Phones and Soccer
Robert Osband was a volunteer at the Citus Bowl during the World Cup matches in Orlando when the international soccer tournament was held in the United States in 1994. Today, he's designing web pages to be read using the web browsers found on mobile phones. This month, during the current World Cup, he's combining his two passions.
With the Domain Name PHonePHriendly.Com, Osband sets up web pages for his own use, and as a place to test web pages he sets up for others. "I've operated SpaceLaunchInfo.Com for years, and sometimes needed to look up my own information when I wasn't near a computer terminal", explains Osband, "but I had my trusty smartphone with me. I figured, as long as I'm putting up the information for me, I'll make it available to the public as well."
Of course, such long domain names are hard on the thumbs when using the tiny keyboards found most mobile phones, so Osband found a shorter domain name. You can also reach his mobile pages at PH2.Mobi, where the PH2 represents PHone PHriendly", Osband explained. He said that the "dotMobi" domains are those that are specifically set up for use with mobile phone web browsers.
With the third match of each World Cup group being played simultaniously, it's hard to keep track of two matches at once. Osband says he's watching one match on ESPN, while using the Match Tracker at FIFA.Com on the internet to watch the score on the other. "When one team scores, I edit the page, and immediately use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to transfer the page to my website.". He's also been known to take his Wi-Fi enabled laptop to a local sports bar to watch both matches simultaniously.
"On Saturday, I plan to watch the USA play Ghana at the Buffalo Wild Wings on SR-436 in Casselberry on their giant wall-sized screen", says Osband. "If the Wi-Fi goes out, I can always update the page on my smartphone. It's a bit slower, but I've done it.
The USA-Ghana match will be shown on WFTV Channel 9 on Saturday, with coverage starting at 2PM.
